Izingadi Zethemba (Gardens of Hope) is an income-generation project of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT).
The mission statement is to empower and uplift people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS to become economically self-sufficient through the production of plants and food within their own environment.
The project's main aim is to provide food and income to families affected/infected by HIV/AIDS through the production and sale of garden produce.
In 2003 a horticulturist on contract to HACT from German Development Services started a horticulture project/food security program. The aim of this project is to produce food gardens to combat malnutrition and also to produce marketable plants as part of our income generation project. Families affected by HIV/AIDS are now producing fresh produce for household consumption and also earning a living from it. Our horticulture project is literally flourishing with more than 150 gardens established. The latest development is that all Home-based carers have a food garden.
We are endeavouring to make this project more sustainable by a nursery which will sell garden plants to the public. This aspect is gaining momentum daily with local people buying plants from us and assisting in fundraising at the same time
